Annu Kapoor recalls Nana Patekar’s gesture in his directorial debut

Veteran actor Nana Patekar’s sudden death has left the Indian film industry in mourning. Actor-director Annu Kapoor reflected on his long association with Patekar and the trust the late actor placed in him early in his directorial career. Patekar died at the age of 75 on October 8 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. He was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted resuscitation for approximately 45 minutes. Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, confirmed his death. Expressing his grief, Kapoor said, “I am saddened and shocked by Nana Patekar’s sudden and untimely death. I have many personal memories with Nana Patekar, and I will never be able to forget them.” Kapoor and Patekar collaborated on Abhay , a Hindi children’s film directed by Kapoor. In the film, which was based on Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost , Patekar portrayed Rana, a ghost. Abhay marked Kapoor’s feature film directorial debut. Recounting Patekar’s decision to participate in the project despite being at the height of his career, Kapoor revealed that the actor trusted the script and accepted a significantly reduced fee. “When he was at the peak of his career and was charging Rs 65-70 lakh, he trusted me after reading the script when I directed the film Abhay . You will be surprised to know that he did that film for just Rs 21,000.” Kapoor also commented on Patekar’s personality: “I cannot express how deeply saddened I am. He was such a fit and full-of-life person.” Nana Patekar began his acting career with Gaman in 1978 and appeared in films such as Parinda , Prahar , Krantiveer , Tiranga , Khamoshi and Ab Tak Chhappan . He continued acting in recent years with roles in Housefull 5 , O’Romeo and Subedar .
