The Hilltop Hoods have gone from playing gigs in Hindley St pubs to having a laneway named after them in one of Adelaide’s highest cultural honours. Clubhouse Lane, running off Hindley St in Adelaide’s CBD , was officially renamed Hilltop Hoods Lane on Wednesday, making the trio the latest South Australian music icons to be permanently recognised in the city they still call home. The honour comes more than three decades after Pressure, Suffa and DJ Debris formed the pioneering hip-hop group as teenagers at Blackwood in Adelaide’s foothills. Two large-scale murals by Adelaide artist Vans the Omega also now dominate the laneway, celebrating the Hilltop Hoods’ career that has produced more than one million album sales, billions of streams and a record seven ARIA number one albums. For the group, the location holds particular significance. “We paid our dues performing in and around these streets,” Pressure said. “Teenage me would have never dreamed one of them would be named after us.” Hilltop Hoods have been honoured with an Adelaide CBD laneway named after them. Despite selling out arena tours and building a global following, the trio have remained closely tied to Adelaide. “We love Adelaide,” Suffa said. “This gesture just connects us even further to the place that we call home.” Hilltop Hoods remain the most featured act in Triple J Hottest 100 history and they were named by Rolling Stone among the greatest Australian acts of all time. Their catalogue includes Australian classics such as The Nosebleed Section, Cosby Sweater, 1955, I Love It and Chase That Feeling. DJ Debris said seeing the group’s name become part of Adelaide’s streetscape was difficult to comprehend. “Adelaide has always been a huge part of who we are and where our music comes from, so having a laneway in the heart of the city named after us is an incredible honour,” he said. Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the honour recognised both the group’s success and their enduring connection to South Australia. “Despite their global success, they have never forgotten their Adelaide roots,” she said. “That’s why it’s fabulous to permanently recognise their achievements on the streets of the city.” The tribute is believed to be the first laneway in Australia dedicated to a hip-hop group, cementing the Hilltop Hoods’ place not just in Australian music history but in the fabric of the city where it all began.
