Nexans has successfully completed the first cable pull-in in France for the Celtic Interconnector project. Developed jointly by the French and Irish Transmission System Operators (RTE and EirGrid), the Celtic Interconnector is a 700 MW project creating the first direct electricity interconnection between Europe (France) and Ireland. With a transmission capacity of 700 MW, it will enable the exchange of electricity between the two countries, supplying power equivalent to approximately 450,000 homes. The project spans about 575 km between La Martyre, Brittany, France, and East Cork, Ireland. It uses 320 kV HVDC technology, including around 500 km of offshore high-voltage cable and approximately 40 km of underground cable in France, 35 km in Ireland, and a 10 km 400 kV HVAC connection to the Irish grid. Nexans is responsible for engineering, manufacturing, and installation of the full cable system, with cables manufactured in Halden, Norway, and Charleroi, Belgium, using advanced XLPE insulation technology. Recognized as a Project of Common Interest by the European Union, the Celtic Interconnector strengthens Europe’s energy system by facilitating cross-border electricity flows and supporting renewable energy integration.
