PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for national unity and restraint in political discourse, warning against using global crises for partisan gain. He emphasized that Malaysia must address mounting economic pressures linked to instability in the Middle East, particularly the widening conflict involving Iran disrupting energy supply chains and pushing up global prices. Despite being a net fuel exporter through Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), Malaysia remains exposed to international volatility due to reliance on imported diesel. Anwar noted that rising global energy costs necessitate unavoidable price adjustments for consumers. He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s non-aligned foreign policy, maintaining cordial relations with major powers, including the United States, China, and Iran, while expressing respectful concerns over humanitarian issues, such as civilian casualties in conflict zones. On domestic mitigation, he proposed reducing road tax for diesel-powered vehicles to ease cost pressures, citing discussions with Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. The remarks were made during the launch of the Road Transport Department’s 80th anniversary celebrations and the MADANI Mega Carnival at Batu Kawan Stadium, Penang.
