South African consumers are facing financial strain due to escalating costs linked to global conflicts, particularly the US-Iran conflict. The US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues to constrain oil supply, directly impacting fuel prices globally and in South Africa. Despite government efforts to mitigate fuel price increases by maintaining the levy for April, consumer surveys reveal severe financial pressure. A Debt Rescue survey found that 9 out of 10 respondents experience serious financial strain, with 52% facing severe pressure and 32% struggling to afford essentials. Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue, warns that further fuel price hikes will exacerbate inflation, leading to job losses, reduced disposable income, and higher debt-servicing costs. This could trigger a vicious cycle of decreased demand, worsening unemployment and economic slowdown. Statistics South Africa reported a slight increase in inflation from 3% to 3.1%, driven by housing, utilities, and entertainment costs. Frank Blackmore, Lead Economist at KPMG South Africa, notes uncertainty around the Middle East conflict’s duration and intensity, keeping interest rates elevated. The Reserve Bank expects GDP growth to reach around 2% by 2028 but anticipates a downward skew in household consumption due to higher inflation. Potential sovereign credit rating upgrades and FATF grey list removal may offer relief by the end of 2025. The Debt Rescue survey also highlights that electricity tariff hikes and municipal increases will further inflate grocery costs, with 60% of respondents expecting price surges and 75% attributing increased costs to fuel hikes. Roets advises consumers to seek help from registered debt counsellors to manage financial predicaments.
