KABUL (Pajhwok): The European Union has nominated Italian diplomat Nicola Bellomo as its new representative to Afghanistan. In a statement, the EU said that Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, had announced the appointment of 33 EU ambassadors and seven deputy heads of EU delegations. According to the statement, Bellomo has been nominated as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim (a.i.) for Afghanistan. He currently serves as Head of Division for Pan-African Affairs at the European External Action Service (EEAS) and has previously held several senior diplomatic posts, including EU Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda. The EU noted that its 145 delegations around the world represent the bloc abroad and play a key role in advancing and protecting its foreign policy and strategic interests. Bellomo’s appointment will take effect following the approval of the Islamic Emirate and the completion of the necessary administrative procedures. The EU also announced the appointment of ambassadors and senior diplomatic representatives to several other countries, including Brazil, the Republic of the Congo, Albania, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya and Libya.
