Motorists have been spared even bigger fuel price increases this month, despite the government reducing its temporary fuel levy relief. The National Treasury is partially rolling back the fuel levy relief introduced earlier this year, adding back 75 cents a litre to both petrol and diesel for June, down from the original R1.50 and R1.96 relief margins. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources said the move comes as the government begins phasing out the relief measures previously announced by the Finance Minister. Even with this intervention, all grades of petrol will increase by R1.43 a litre from Wednesday. However, diesel users will see some relief, with prices dropping by between R2.62 and R3.25 a litre. Department spokesperson Robert Maake said the price of illuminating paraffin will also decrease, dropping by R5.96 a litre. "The amount of general fuel levy relief has been reduced by R1.50 cents per litre for petrol and by R1.96 cents per litre for diesel in line with the announcement by the Minister of Finance. This late levy increases by 35 cents per litre from 122.70 to 157.74 cents per litre."
