Congratulations are in order for Sam Smith and their partner, fashion designer Christian Cowan, who are reportedly engaged. Smith, 33, and Cowan, 32, were heard talking about their engagement at the Mark Hotel shortly before walking the Met Gala red carpet yesterday, according to a source from Page Six who was also in the lobby. "They are over the moon, and from what I hear, so in love!" the source claimed, adding that it seemed like a private engagement. Designer Christian Cowan and singer Sam Smith are reportedly engaged. But keen-eyed fans would have cottoned on once they spotted the rock on Cowan's left ring finger. The designer, who put together both his and Smith's Erté-inspired Met Gala costumes, wore a massive yellow diamond – believed to be from Cartier – as he showed off his partner on the red carpet. Smith, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, also shared close-ups of both outfits on Instagram, where the ring could be seen in all its glory. In the caption, Smith quoted Cowan as he explained his admiration for Russian-French artist and designer Erté. "This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam," Cowan said. The couple, both UK natives, were first linked in December 2022 when they were spotted watching then-President Joe Biden sign the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) into law at the White House. This is not their first Met Gala together, having made their debut in 2024 and attending last year as well.
