One of the most iconic bands of the 1990s has confirmed they are splitting after 30 years. Aqua shot to fame back in 1997 with their legendary hit Barbie Girl. Since then, the band have had a string of hits and have toured the world with their blend of electropop and club bangers. But on Monday (May 18), the four-piece group confirmed in a touching statement that they would no longer be performing together and the band would be dissolved. Fans have been left speechless at the move and have flooded the band's social media with tributes to their legendary music. The band, which come from both Denmark and Norway, first formed all the way back in 1995. In the 31 years the band were together, they went on to sell a massive 33million albums and singles all across the world. In a statement released on Instagram, the band penned: "After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band. AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we’ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of. "We’ve travelled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever. When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together." The band added: "For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past 30 years. "Thank you for the love, the energy, the support, and for all the moments we’ve shared together. Nothing but love and gratitude from here on." The band was made up of René Dif, Lene Nystrøm, Claus Norreen and Søren Rasted and were responsible for some of the biggest Europop songs of the early 21st century. Claus would end up leaving the band in 2016 so he could focus on other projects he was involved in. Fans were shocked at the announcement, with one user writing: "So disappointing and sad for the fans and unexpected." A second penned: "End of an era! I have so many beautiful memories over decades and I’m so grateful I’ve been able to see you a few times." Meanwhile a third wrote: "Devastated, but also so grateful to have seen your brilliant live show several times. Your incredible catalogue of songs will live on forever."
