However, direct talks between the US and Iranian delegations appear unlikely. What's happening in the Strait of Hormuz The strategic waterway remains a sensitive issue after the US and Iran exchanged attacks before agreeing to halt hostilities. Oman has put forward a proposal to the United States and its allies on the future of the Strait of Hormuz, CNN reported, citing a regional diplomat and a US source familiar with the matter. The proposal, which is yet to be finalised, calls for shipping companies to pay service charges for using the strait, though the payments would not be described as tolls. The diplomat did not explain the distinction between the two. Meanwhile, Iran is set to hold funeral ceremonies for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei across Iran and Iraq from July 4 to July 9, months after his death. According to a schedule published by the semi-official Fars News Agency, a tribute ceremony for foreign dignitaries and senior officials will be held in Tehran on July 3, followed by public farewell ceremonies at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla on July 4 and 5. Jul 01, 2026 10:59:17 AM IST US-Iran LIVE updates: Former US president Barack Obama criticised the Trump administration's approach to Iran, saying the United States had abandoned an agreement that was already preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. "There was a deal in place in which Iran had agreed not to develop nuclear weapons that the entire international community, including Israeli intelligence, our own intelligence agencies, assessed was working," Obama said. "This administration, or a prior version of this administration, pulled out of it, which caused then Iran to develop more nuclear capacity," he added. Obama added that the United States is “worse off” from pre-war period. "We've now fought a war, spent billions and billions of dollars, put enormous strain on our military. A lot of people have died," he said. "And it feels like we're back where we were before we started the war—except maybe a little bit worse off." Referring to the ceasefire, Obama said there was still uncertainty over the next steps. "My understanding is that the ceasefire says we've now got 60 days to develop a plan to deal with the nuclear issue, but we don't know yet what that plan is," he said. Jul 01, 2026 10:51:20 AM IST US-Iran LIVE updates: Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Tuesday said that Tehran has exported over 40 million barrels of oil since the US blockade was lifted. “From the day the blockade was actually lifted until today, we have exported over 40 million barrels of oil — and this happened in just the last 10 or 12 days. But in the previous 50 or 60 days, we truly didn't export even a single barrel of oil. We were entirely tied up with this issue.” He added that the ‘free’ passage of ships through Hormuz is only for 60 days, as stated in the MoU. “The text of the understanding states that passage through the strait without charge is only for 60 days. Iran will under no circumstances back down from its rights in the Strait of Hormuz. These are our territorial waters.” Jul 01, 2026 10:28:20 AM IST US-Iran LIVE updates: India’s largest private fuel retailer, Nayara Energy, reportedly reduced petrol prices by ₹ 5 per litre and diesel by ₹ 3 across its nationwide network, in line with the lower global oil prices. Nayara Energy was also the first to increase fuel prices at the peak of the US-Iran war. The revised rates have taken effect at over 7,000 Nayara fuel stations across the nation, news agency PTI reported, citing industry sources. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) now costs ₹ 110 a litre in Delhi, PTI news agency reported, citing industry sources. This is the first reduction since the West Asia crisis led to a spike in jet fuel rates to a record high and comes amid easing of tensions in the region that was rocked by missile-drone exchange between US-Israel and Iran. The fire exchange brought to a halt movement of vessels in Strait of Hormuz, key waterway through which a fifth of world's oil and gas requirements travelled before the US-Iran war. Trump has held several conversations regarding what officials have referred to as “finishing the job” in Iran with defense secretary Pete Hegseth and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Gen. Dan Caine on more strikes. According to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report, while Pentagon briefings on a president's military options are not uncommon amid conflict or tensions, given that Trump is routinely holding formal and impromptu meetings on Iran, the latest discussions indicate that he has been looking for ways to break the deadlock with Iran, and has not ruled out return to strikes. However, the same report said that Trump is not considering a return to war and believes that renewed strikes could hurt US's chances of crushing Iran's nuclear dreams.
