Munetaka Murakami took over the MLB home-run lead tonight with a three-run homer that secured the game-winner. After a three-hour rain delay, the White Sox and Angels played the game at 9:40 p.m. CT, ending 35 minutes into Tuesday in Chicago with the Sox winning 8-7.
The first inning saw the Angels take an early lead: Mike Trout doubled and scored on a sac fly, putting the Angels up 1-0. The Sox struggled early, with starter Anthony Kay struggling further in the second inning, allowing multiple runs and forcing a 3-0 lead for the Angels. In the fifth inning, Osvaldo Bido came in to help, and the Sox scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Angels rallied in the seventh inning, but the Sox’s bullpen held strong, with Murakami hitting a home run to take over the MLB home-run lead with 12. Miguel Vargas added another solo home run, bringing the Sox’s total to seven runs in the seventh inning, up 8-5.
Murakami’s first 12 MLB extra-base hits were all home runs, extending the longest such streak in his career since at least 1900. He also tied Will Smith of the Dodgers for third-most home runs hit in a player’s first 29 career games. The Angels had a late rally in the ninth, but the Sox’s bullpen, including Bryan Hudson, sealed the win with a final out, giving the White Sox a dramatic comeback victory.
