The new language of sportswear is less about the gym than it is about the city. Across the Paris Fashion Week runways, athletic codes have shed their utilitarian associations to take on a more sophisticated attitude in recent times. Performance fabrics, drawstring waists and track-inspired silhouettes are being placed in conversation with evening glamour, intricate embellishment and exacting tailoring. Sportswear no longer reads as purely functional. It has now evolved into a considered part of the modern wardrobe. At Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada pushed that tension further for Spring/Summer 2027, treating familiar athletic pieces with the refinement that have become signatures of the house. The collection moved freely between the worlds of sport and occasion dressing: an embellished halterneck bra top appeared with drawstring shorts, while a snakeskin oversized jacket was layered over a sheer, patterned black shirt punctuated with chain detailing and finished with white drawstring shorts. A model strutted down the runway in an embellished bra top worn over a technical performance shirt, while a patterned bralette emerged above a close-fitting brown T-shirt. A colour-blocked track jacket, pink drawstring shorts and a choker sharpened the look, turning what might ordinarily belong to a locker-room wardrobe into something altogether more fashion-conscious. The proposition was clear: everyday athletic staples could be dressed up as evening pieces. The maison brought polish to the codes of performance, allowing practical silhouettes to acquire a more urban character. As a result, sportswear is now capable of moving between the street and the after-dark wardrobe without changing its essential identity. Gigi Hadid gave her own stamp of approval to this trend. Closing the show, she wore a dark grey sports bra reimagined with a dramatic halterneck and plunging back, its construction almost suggesting the bra had been worn in reverse. The pared-back top was set against a low-slung, pleated midi skirt in charcoal grey. Along either hip, elongated panels fell towards the hem, densely worked with rows of intricate beads and crystals, introducing a flash of evening opulence to an otherwise athletic silhouette. On her feet, grey-and-white trainers punctuated with neon yellow brought the look back to the language of movement. Her beauty was deliberately restrained: a tousled low ponytail, a fresh, near-make-up-free complexion and green-stone earrings were all that she needed to complete her simple-yet-so-put-together look. The collection dissolved the distinction between dressed and undressed, practical and style, performance and occasion. Miu Miu is not alone in pursuing this shift. Across recent runways, designers have increasingly folded technical materials, relaxed proportions and athletic references into collections built for contemporary city life. The change is subtle but significant. Performance dressing is no longer confined to the moments when the body is expected to perform; its visual language has become part of how fashion understands movement, ease and modernity.
