Sometimes, leaders emerge who embody the values of their office, and Pope Leo XIV is one such figure. As the head of the Catholic church, he has been using his authority to confront bullying behavior, particularly from US President Donald Trump.

Trump's approach to diplomacy has often involved making threats and using profanity-laced language to intimidate other world leaders. However, this approach has not gone unchallenged, and Pope Leo XIV has been at the forefront of those speaking out against it.

A Call for Peace

The Pope has made his objections to Trump's behavior clear, stating that threats against entire populations are "truly unacceptable." He has also called for people to think deeply about the innocent victims of war and to consider the impact of their actions.

Leo's words have prompted a response from Trump and his supporters, who have attempted to frame the issue as a Holy War. However, the Pope has rejected this notion, insisting that the God he serves is a God of peace who rejects war.

In a homily, Leo stated, "Brothers and sisters, this is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war... He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them, saying: 'Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: Your hands are full of blood.'"

A Challenge to Trump and Netanyahu

The Pope's comments were likely directed at US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and other proponents of war, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Leo urged them to stop the violence they have unleashed and to seek peace through dialogue and mediation.

He stated, "To them we cry out: Stop. It is time for peace. Sit at the table of dialogue and mediation – not at the table where rearmament is planned and deadly actions are decided... Enough of the display of power! Enough of war! True strength is shown in serving life."

The Trump administration has responded to the Pope's comments with hostility, with a senior Pentagon official warning the Vatican's US envoy that Washington has the military power to do whatever it wants. However, the Pope remains unafraid, stating, "I'm not afraid of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do, what the church is here to do."

A Clash of Values

The exchange between the Pope and Trump has highlighted the stark divide between their values and approaches. While Trump represents the strongman trope, the Pope embodies dignity, tolerance, and understanding.

The Pope's stand against Trump's aggressive diplomacy has shown that true strength lies in moral clarity, not in the pursuit of power and wealth. As the Pope said, "I'm not afraid... of speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel," and this courage has inspired many to speak out against injustice and to seek peace.
