SHAH ALAM (April 29): The Selangor state government is promoting the use of recycled water or treated raw water for new data centres to ensure sustainable water resource management. Chairman of the State Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee, Ng Sze Han, stated this during a session in the Selangor state legislative assembly on Wednesday. He clarified that data centres do not require treated, potable-quality water, and instead, methods like water recycling and sourcing raw water for specific data centre needs are encouraged. Ng addressed concerns raised by Michelle Ng Mei Sze (PH-Subang Jaya) about high water consumption by data centres and its potential impact on domestic clean water supplies. He emphasized that the state government will ensure essential infrastructure, including stable electricity supply, high-capacity telecommunications networks, and sufficient water resources, to support high-technology industries. Investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres is currently focused on strategic local authority areas such as Sepang, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Klang.
