Somalia is moving to expand its seafood exports after China announced a zero-tariff policy on imports from 53 African countries. This policy, effective May 1, allows Somali marine products to enter Chinese markets duty-free, eliminating a major trade barrier. Fisheries Minister Ahmed Hassan Aden stated that this agreement creates a direct export pathway to one of the world’s largest consumer markets, replacing indirect routes previously reliant on third-party countries. The move is expected to attract investment and expand production. Somalia, with Africa’s longest mainland coastline along the Indian Ocean, has significant untapped potential in fisheries. Officials say the new policy could accelerate efforts to develop the ‘blue economy’ and scale up exports. At Mogadishu’s main fish market, traders and fishermen report substantial daily catches of tuna, mackerel, and lobster, but limited cold storage and export infrastructure constrain growth. Mohamed Hyder, a fisherman from Hamar Weyne, notes production peaks between October and April but drops during rough weather due to limited equipment. He emphasizes the need for advanced, motorized vessels to maintain year-round production. Industry leaders, such as Kamal Maki Aweys, highlight the lack of large-scale storage and export systems as a key issue, forcing fishermen to sell locally and limiting earnings. With proper access to global markets, daily yields could scale from hundreds to thousands of kilograms. The government is prioritizing investment in cold storage, logistics, and port infrastructure to support export growth, while encouraging private sector participation.
