Dominic Frimpong, a promising young winger for Berekum Chelsea, was fatally shot during an armed robbery on his team's bus as they returned from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex on Sunday.
According to Berekum Chelsea, the team bus was ambushed by six masked men wielding guns and assault rifles. As the bus attempted to reverse away from the danger, the robbers opened fire, striking Frimpong in the head. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the 20-year-old succumbed to his wounds.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its deep sorrow and shock at the news of Frimpong's passing, extending its condolences to the family, teammates, and staff of Berekum Chelsea. The GFA described Frimpong as a talented young player who embodied the spirit of the league, having scored two goals in 13 appearances this season.
This incident is not an isolated one, as several Ghanaian football teams, including FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities, and AshantiGold, have reported similar attacks in recent years. Local police have deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area, vowing to arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible.
The GFA's statement highlighted the shockwaves sent across the football fraternity, emphasizing the need for swift action to ensure the safety and security of players and staff. Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC earlier this year, showcasing his potential as a rising star in Ghanaian football.
