Turkey’s rapidly expanding use of internet blocking orders has developed into what journalists and rights advocates describe as an unprecedented crackdown. The independent news outlet T24 is the latest major media organisation to be targeted. An Istanbul court on September 30 ordered access to be blocked to T24’s website and social media accounts under Article 8/A of Turkey’s Internet Law, citing the prevention of crime and protection of public order. The decision concerned 118 items on the T24 site that allegedly weaken the “Turkish family structure” and negatively affect young people’s development regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. T24 was founded in 2009 and is now one of Turkey’s most-read high-quality journalism platforms. T24 said it had removed all 118 pieces within the four-hour deadline it was given. Access to the entire website was still blocked. Subscribe to Balkan Insight Premium to read the full article. Please login to your account below if you are already a Premium Subscriber.
