The UK has announced plans to deliver a record-breaking shipment of 120,000 drones to Ukraine, marking the largest delivery of its kind. This move comes as the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, with drones playing an increasingly dominant role on both sides of the conflict.

Defence Secretary John Healey described the shipment as a "big boost" for Ukraine, stating that it would not be distracted by recent events in the Middle East. Healey is set to co-chair a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Berlin, where he will meet with NATO Secretary General Rutte and the Ukrainian and German defence ministers.

Drone Package Details

The drone package will include a range of devices, such as long-range strike drones, reconnaissance drones, logistics drones, and those with maritime capabilities. Many of these drones have been produced by UK-based companies, with delivery of the "cutting-edge battlefield technology" starting this month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced that Ukraine had captured a Russian position using ground-based and aerial drones alone for the first time. This development comes as US peace negotiators have reportedly been distracted by the war with Iran, according to AFP.

Defence Secretary Healey reiterated the UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating that "Ukrainians continue to fight with huge courage and nothing will distract us from continuing to stand with them for as long as it takes to secure peace." Chancellor Rachel Reeves is also expected to announce further support measures for Ukraine at a meeting of international finance ministers in Washington DC.

Despite a supposed ceasefire to mark Orthodox Easter, Russian attacks on Ukraine have continued. The northern Sumy region saw three separate strikes on an industrial zone, while Russian strikes also hit the south of Odesa, causing fires near the port.

The path to peace remains uncertain, with several rounds of talks having taken place but the process currently on hold. Kyiv has proposed a full and stable ceasefire as a first step towards negotiating a lasting end to Russia's invasion, but Moscow insists on agreeing to a peace deal first.
