United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau is visiting Indonesia this week to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation. Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela confirmed that Deputy Minister Landau was received by Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno in Jakarta on Friday, June 12. "The two Deputy Foreign Ministers discussed several priority bilateral issues, including the digital economy, and encouraged the entry of U.S. investors into Indonesia across various sectors," Nabyl said in a written statement on Saturday, as quoted by ANTARA. In addition to economic issues, Landau and Havas discussed ways to strengthen partnerships in renewable energy, technology, and maritime affairs. Indonesia welcomes Deputy Foreign Minister Landau's visit as part of efforts to strengthen friendship within the framework of the strategic partnership between Indonesia and the U.S., Nabyl said. In addition to holding bilateral meetings, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State is also known to have visited the National Museum and the Textile Museum during his visit to Jakarta. Prior to meeting Havas, Landau held a bilateral meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn on Thursday, June 11. According to a written statement published on the official ASEAN website, the two parties discussed ways to strengthen the ASEAN-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) during the meeting. The discussed steps include commemorating the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue Partnership and the fifth anniversary of the CSP in 2027. ASEAN stated that the two parties also exchanged views regarding regional and global developments, as well as other issues of mutual concern. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau traveled to Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia from June 6-13 for his first official visit to Southeast Asia as deputy secretary. After holding bilateral meetings with his counterpart in Singapore, he continued his trip to Vietnam. There, he had the opportunity to share his views at the ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi, in addition to meeting with senior officials. According to the U.S. Department of State, Landau's visit to Indonesia aims to deepen bilateral economic cooperation and discuss increasing U.S. business investment to promote shared prosperity and support the economic priorities of both countries.
