Wildfires force 250,000 people to flee from their homes

Wildfires in southwest France have forced the evacuation of 55,000 people, bringing the total displaced in the Gironde region to 220,000, as flames approach Bordeaux. Shifting winds and arid conditions have complicated firefighting efforts against the blaze, which has burned 42,000 hectares, an area four times the size of Paris. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the situation as “very unfavourable”, with the fire becoming “extremely virulent” and generating its own winds. Neighbouring Spain has also seen significant evacuations, with 76,000 people displaced and one fatality recorded in the Valencia region due to ongoing wildfires.
