A clip showing a young woman falling several metres down at a scenic spot in Sichuan, China has made rounds on the Internet and horrified netizens. Following the tragedy, an investigation was launched by authorities and the nature park involved in the mishap has been closed temporarily. In the clip, the woman is fastened to the bungee swing via a safety harness and ropes. As she was hoisted towards the edge of a platform via a mechanical cable, the woman begins to yell about the safety rope not being “tight enough” several times. However, her friends, who were recording her, thought she was freaking out and laughed in response. Unfortunately, their laughter quickly turned to horror when the safety rope suddenly snapped, sending the woman falling right off the cliff. According to Hong Kong daily The Standard, the freak accident took place on May 3 at the Maliuyan Waterfall scenic spot in Huaying. It also reported that the operator of the bungee swing, Chongqing Adventure Camp, had promoted the bungee swing on its WeChat public account in March. As for the woman, who was identified as Liu, she died while on the way to the hospital and the company is in contact with her family. The scenic spot has since been closed for rectification, with officials classifying the incident as a production safety responsibility accident and identifying those responsible for the mishap. Operations were also temporarily suspended until May 10 for equipment inspection and maintenance, citing force majeure factors.
