Belfast alternative indie rock outfit O, Kenayda have released their new single, Sun City Poms. We asked the band's front man Dave Kennedy the BIG questions... Formed by songwriter Dave (formerly of Belfast alt-folk act Master & Dog), O, Kenayda features him on guitar/vocals, Amy McGarrigle (bass/vocals), Stevie McCullough (guitar/vocals), Kev Carlisle (drums), and Louise Kennedy (sampler/vocals). Speaking about their new track, the band, who recently released their debut album, Orphans, say, "The Sun City Poms are an over 55s cheerleading troupe from Arizona. For the last 45 years, they have inspired the world with magnetic routines, sisterly solidarity and a positive message that 'age is just a number' - this song is not their story but is heavily inspired by them." Tell us three things about yourself... When I was younger, I wanted to be one of these: a musician, a sound engineer with his own studio OR work for the Jim Henson Creature Shop. I've done two out of three, so not too bad. I've a mild addiction to Football Manager on the PC. I lose weeks to it every year. I know it's a waste of time but it soothes the brain so... I'm also a bit of a boardgame nerd and would happily spend 12 hours playing Twilight Imperium with a few friends if the offer is on the table. You in? How would you describe your music? The album is the sound of down-tuned guitars, uplifting choruses with an honest set of lyrics. An update on 90s alternative rock. Whereas the latest single, Sun City Poms, is the fun side of the record and a bit more poppy. Who are your musical inspirations? Pixies, Quasi, Elliott Smith, Wilco, Pavement, and The Wedding Present. The list goes on but you get the idea. What was the first gig you ever went to? I was lucky enough to be brought to see Michael Jackson in Lansdowne Rd in '92, which was an amazing experience but my first gig by myself was Ash in the Olympia back in 1998. I remember [Northern Irish band] Chicks opened for them, and until that moment it never really occurred to me that I could do something like that. It's still on my bucket list - play the Olympia. Know anyone that needs a support act? What was the first record you ever bought? Single: Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini by Bombalurina on 7" vinyl and I still have it. Album: Dangerous by Michael Jackson. I mean, you gotta love the art not the artist right? What’s your favourite song right now? Are You Mine by Kim Deal it's two years old now but that album is just a work of art. Favourite lyric of all time? "Don't let the time go by, Without sitting your mother down, And asking what life was like for her, Before you came to be around, And tell her it's okay if she puts herself first, Us kids we'll be alright if we're not the centre of her universe - Don't Let The Kids Win by Julia Jacklin If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Who Knows Where The Time Goes - the live cover by Nina Simone. With the chatter at the start included. Where did the time go? I love the original but Nina just adds so much depth, sadness and joy all at the same time. Every time I listen to it I end up in a different place emotionally. It's just beautiful. Where can people find your music/more information? Through my website or you can stream the album on Qobuz, Tidal, Bandcamp and Soundcloud. The website has all my links.
