Botswana Donates FMD Vaccines to Lesotho

Maseru — Botswana has donated 100 000 doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine to Lesotho. This donation, produced by the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI), aims to bolster Lesotho’s disease response and reinforce bilateral cooperation. Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, described the gift as a symbol of friendship and practical collaboration, aligning with commitments under the Botswana-Lesotho Binational Commission. The vaccines are intended to protect livestock, ensure food security, and support economic development. FMD poses a major threat to livestock production and trade, disrupting movement and access to markets. Dr Dikoloti emphasized that while vaccines are crucial, effective control requires proper planning, storage, administration, surveillance, and farmer awareness. BVI will also conduct a vaccine handling workshop for Lesotho’s veterinary officials to enhance vaccine use and sustainability. Livestock remains vital for national development, contributing to productive farming, stable livelihoods, and community well-being. The donation underscores Botswana’s commitment to regional cooperation against transboundary animal diseases, aiming to strengthen SADC member states’ animal health systems and protect livestock value chains. Dr Dikoloti highlighted that such outbreaks can impact neighboring countries, making support an act of solidarity and investment in regional resilience.
