Donegal Rose Emma wins hearts in Tralee with special tribute to brother Michael

Donegal Rose Emma Nelis closed the opening night of the Rose of Tralee TV final in style on Monday, winning hearts with family tales and a moving tribute to her brother Michael. The 24-year-old teacher from Gartan was the final Rose interviewed on Monday night. She spoke proudly about family, Gartan, Glenveagh Castle, teaching, and GAA. Emma also included her brother Michael in the tribute, saying, "Hello, Michael. You’re watching at home in Donegal." Michael has an acquired brain injury and is at home in respite. Emma highlighted the support of Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, which provides respite care for her family. Her parents, Mary and Michael, supported her in the audience. Emma described growing up on a family farm and now teaches History and English at Errigal College in Letterkenny. She also coaches, plays football, and trains for Hyrox. Emma joked she would have preferred to be last on stage. She proudly mentioned her hometown, Gartan, known for its local traditions, including clay associated with protection. She also shared her family’s connection to Glenveagh Castle, where her mother worked for over 50 years. Emma revealed family reminders inside the castle, such as old Spice Girls stickers. She thanked her CLG An Tearmainn teammates and students for their support. Emma celebrated Termon GAA’s recent All-Ireland Gaeltacht title. She also showcased her dancing skills, jiving with escort Kevin Ross to ‘Stop the World and Let Me Off.’ Asked if the Rose of Tralee exceeded expectations, Emma said it had gone beyond her imagination.
