I wasn’t jailed because of money: Rajpal Yadav opens up on Rs 9 crore case

Actor Rajpal Yadav has addressed the controversy surrounding his jail term in connection with a multi-crore loan dispute and cheque bounce case, saying the situation has been widely misunderstood. Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra ’s podcast, the actor pushed back against the perception that his legal troubles stemmed from an inability to repay money. The conversation began with a reference to Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who once praised Rajpal as a “kind-hearted” person who supported struggling actors. Yadav acknowledged that many question how someone with a long film career could face such a situation. However, he insisted the issue went beyond finances. “That’s exactly the question the day people understand this, they will understand my entire case I was not jailed because I didn’t have money. It was about a larger issue and a matter of principle,” he said. He further claimed that if the matter had been limited toRs 5 crore, it would have been resolved years ago, adding that the dispute eventually escalated into significantly higher losses. “ Ye 5 crore ka masla hota to 2012 me nipat ta. Iss 5 crore ne 17 crore ko dubane ka kaam kiya hai (If this would have been 5 crore, the issue would have been settled back in 2012. This 5 crore has ended up sinking 17 crore),” he stated. Rajpal also spoke about the film project at the centre of the controversy, revealing that a significant portion was completed before problems arose. He stated, “12 crore had already been spent... it became a 22 crore project. If even enemies are involved in a project, they should let it release. The audience should decide.” Responding to allegations of fraud, the actor defended the unpredictability of the film business. He noted that a large number of films fail commercially, and that failure alone should not be equated with wrongdoing.
