Photos: Eric Wynn Germany’s Jonas Schomburg’s rise in the world of long-distance racing finally lived up to expectations in August when he blasted to a 7:22:57 win at IRONMAN Sweden in Kalmar. Ever since his full-distance race – a third-place finish at IRONMAN South Africa in 2025, Schomburg has appeared to be on the precipice of great things on the long-course front. He followed his podium performance in South Africa with a surprise appearance at Challenge Roth (a mechanical issue forced him out of the race at the IRONMAN European Championship in Frankfurt), where he took second. Later that year he would be in the mix during the early part of the run at the IRONMAN World Championship in Nice, but would have to “settle” with sixth that day. In other words, it was obvious the guy was super-talented, and had all the makings of an IRONMAN champion. He just hadn’t put it all together in a race. That streak continued through the early part of 2026. He was seventh in the super-competitive IRONMAN Texas. Then was up front early in Roth, riding with Sam Laidlow and Rico Bogen, but would fall off the pace and eventually end up fifth. Then came the breakthrough in Kalmar. This time the strong swim and strong bike were followed up by an impressive 2:34:26 marathon – only super-runner Matt Hanson would go faster. The German star arrives here in Kona on a tricked-out Canyon Speedmax that has been tweaked to optimize his chances for another big day on the Big Island. Slowtwitch caught up with Schomburg here in Kona to check out the speedy ride.
