A long-lost photo of a young David Bowie backstage at a gig arranged by a group of Stockport teenagers in 1970 has emerged after 56 years. David Maynard, now 74, was a member of the Stockport Schools' Student Union that booked Bowie for a gig at the Poco A Poco Club in Heaton Chapel. Photos of the event were believed to have been lost, but Maynard found one hidden in his loft after a water leak damaged many other photographs. The picture, digitally re-colourised, shows Bowie in his stage outfit flanked by seven of the sixth formers. Maynard, second from the left, recalled the night as hectic, with the venue overcrowded and making significant bar profits. He described Bowie as quiet but personable, with a serious, studious air. The discovery was shared by Stockport Music Story, which installed a plaque at Stockport train station marking Bowie’s visit. Maynard also mentioned a press photographer, Derek Martin, who worked on the Stockport Express, and encouraged anyone familiar with him to contact Stockport Music Story.
