New Radicals Released a Smash Hit in 1998 and Vanished—Now They’re Back

New Radicals of the ‘90s hit “You Get What You Give” debut their first new track in nearly 30 years, with a song on the soundtrack for an upcoming rom-com. Remember the New Radicals? They had a hit in the late ‘90s with the alt/indie rock track “You Get What You Give,” and then seemingly vanished for nearly three decades. Now, the band has released its first new song in almost 28 years, “One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!).” The song appears on the soundtrack for an upcoming romantic comedy aptly named One Night Only. The track marks New Radicals’ first new single since their 1998 album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, which included their timeless hit. Frontman Gregg Alexander disbanded the group only the following year, but he continued to work in the industry as a songwriter and producer. He’s worked on hits like Michelle Branch’s “Game of Love,” Adam Levine’s “Lost Stars,” and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dance Floor.” In the meantime, New Radicals didn’t reunite until 2021, when Alexander and longtime collaborator Danielle Brisebois, alongside touring musicians, performed at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration parade. Alexander and Brisebois also wrote a song together for a Kamala Harris campaign video in 2024. That led New Radicals to revisit hits that Alexander co-wrote, having re-recorded “Lost Stars” and “Murder on the Dance Floor” under the band’s name in 2024. Last month, they even took over for Santana on Branch’s re-recording of “The Game of Love.” But those are re-releases and collaborations—not new music. Now, with the release of “One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!),” New Radicals has given the world first new track under that moniker in decades. The film is “about searching for love on the least romantic night of the year,” and is due to release on August 7. A portion of its soundtrack came out on Friday, including the New Radicals track, King Princess’ cover of the disco hit “Love Is in the Air,” and a preview of Este Haim’s film score.
