Nigel Farage wins Clacton byelection but shuns count after ‘advice from police’

Nigel Farage has won the Clacton byelection amid claims he was advised by police not to attend the count due to a credible threat. Farage declared victory ahead of the official result, calling it an overwhelming endorsement. However, he announced he would not attend the official declaration at Clacton Leisure Centre after Essex Police reportedly advised him against it due to an organized threat. Reform UK later clarified Essex Police did not instruct Farage or other candidates to stay away. Farage, speaking at an all-night event, dismissed concerns, stating he would not attend the count to avoid humiliation. He claimed the result was a resounding victory, with more votes than in the 2024 general election, and accused voters of rejecting the political establishment. He also addressed controversies, including a £5 million donation from cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne, which triggered his resignation from Parliament. Labour and Conservatives criticized Farage’s victory, noting it did not resolve the Harborne scandal. A record 34 candidates ran, with satirical candidate Count Binface appearing as Farage’s main challenger. Binface suggested a potential second byelection if Farage’s claims were proven false. Turnout was 44.37%, down from 58.71% in the 2024 general election. Labour chair Bridget Phillipson accused Farage of deflecting attention from scandals, including the £5 million gift and support from a convicted fraudster. Farage faces potential investigations over Harborne’s gift and support from George Cottrell, which could lead to a recall petition and another byelection if rules are broken.
