Thousands evacuate after Indonesia earthquake kills 51, cuts roads

Around 5,000 people have been evacuated after a magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia, killing at least 51 and injuring 36 seriously, 77 with minor injuries. The quake occurred in East Nusa Tenggara province on August 15, 2026, followed by 341 aftershocks. Over 3,300 people in the Sikka region self-evacuated or were in a sports arena. Some residents were stranded under makeshift tents, while others sought shelter outside hospitals. Abdul Mutas, 63, described fleeing to a tarp due to rising tides. Simon Subandi, deputy regent of Sikka, noted most residents avoided staying indoors. Over 3,500 military and police officers were deployed. Rescuers accessed parts of Maumere blocked by landslides, with over 1,300 homes damaged. Twenty petrol stations were non-operational due to power outages. The East Nusa Tenggara government considered declaring an emergency. On Flores island, thousands fled homes, with some hiding on hilltops due to fear of returning. At least 101 residents were injured, and survivors urgently needed tents, food, medicines, and generators. The death toll rose to 52 by Sunday morning.
