Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has met with US Vice-President JD Vance at the White House, in a move that highlights the strong bond between the two men despite the strained relationship between their respective leaders.

Lammy, who also serves as justice secretary, overseeing prisons in England and Wales, held separate 45-minute meetings with Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions focused on the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

A Friendship Forged Across the Atlantic

The friendship between Lammy and Vance began when Lammy was an opposition MP and Vance was newly elected to the US Senate. Last summer, Vance and his family stayed with Lammy at his grace and favour home, Chevening, in Kent, during a summer holiday visit to the UK.

Lammy took to social media to express his delight at meeting Vance, saying it was "great to catch up with my friend JD Vance today in DC following his talks in Pakistan." He added, "it is vital that the ceasefire continues and we get shipping flowing freely again through the Straits of Hormuz. We continue to work together towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

The meetings come as the prime minister and Sir Keir Starmer have publicly criticized US President Donald Trump's language, particularly his threat to Iran, which was deemed "wrong" by Starmer. The prime minister has also distanced himself from Trump's comments, stating that the UK will not participate in America's blockade of Iranian ports.

While the specifics of the conversation between Lammy and Vance remain unclear, their friendship is seen as a valuable asset in bridging the gap between the two governments. As the relationship between their leaders remains chilly, the warm friendship between Lammy and Vance offers a glimmer of hope for cooperation between the two nations.
