While the government has announced plans to build a semiconductor supply chain and an AI data center as the core of the three mega projects, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, is reportedly considered as a candidate for SK Group's AI data center. Representative Lee Jong-bae (Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do) of the People's Power said on the 5th, "Chungju is being considered as a candidate site for SK Group's AI data center." "SK Group officials visited Chungju Dream Park Industrial Complex on the 2nd to conduct an on-site inspection of the business site and power supply conditions," lawmaker Lee said through data. "It is known that it is under internal review as one of the AI data center candidates." "The hosting of the AI data center will be a turning point in enhancing Chungju's future industrial competitiveness," he said. "We cannot predict the results as we are currently in the stage of comprehensive review of several candidate sites, but we will focus all our capabilities on building power infrastructure and providing administrative support so that Chungju can be selected as the best location." Rep. Lee also added that he has been in talks with related organizations, such as Korea Electric Power Corp., on improving power supply conditions to solve the power supply problem, which is a key task in attracting AI data centers. SK Group announced that it would build a 1GW (gigawatt) AI data center in the Chungcheong area at a national report meeting in Chungcheong Province held on the 2nd.
