WNBA fans find Donald Trump's comments on why Sophie Cunningham should stay in the WNBA hilarious

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will be a free agent in the offseason, and President Donald Trump would like to see her get another WNBA contract, but not for the reasons one would hope. Cunningham has become one of the most popular players in the WNBA during the 2026 season due to her political stances resonating with the majority of people who are against trans inclusion in women’s sports. This rise in popularity has made Cunningham remaining with the WNBA a great business move, even though her on-court stats tell a different story, something that even the President is cognisant of. Donald Trump openly says Sophie Cunningham is better at pulling ratings than basketball At a recent rally in Ohio, Trump openly discussed Cunningham by referring to her as a beautiful woman who men would want on their WNBA team just because she will bring them to attend games with her beauty rather than her basketball ability. “We like Sophie Cunningham. You have a lot of men wanting to go and watch her, she is beautiful... You probably would not mind having her on your team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance.” "We like Sophie Cunningham." President Trump compliments the popular Indiana Fever player, calling her a "beautiful young woman" before joking that "any time a politician says a woman is beautiful, that's generally the end of his political career." My. God. Even he knows she’s not actually a good player,” said another bemused fan . MORE SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM STORIES “This is so degrading. Whew, I hope she’s happy,” lamented another fan . “For the first time ever, I’d like to hear something discussed on Sophie’s podcast,” joked one fan . “Everyone calling him a creep and WNBA fans just happy he said she sucks,” said another fan . Cunningham averaged 7.9 points on 41.6% from three during the 2026 season, finishing as one of the most efficient outside shooters in the league. However, her limited volume and production did not allow her to leverage her high efficiency into a high-level season. Her popular appeal will make WNBA teams consider signing her for the profile she brings alongside her floor-spacing ability, but it might not feel great for her to hear the President openly say that her value in the league is to bring in fans due to her looks, not her shooting ability.
