Jul 31, 2026 Beijing policymakers have made a rare public reference to the nation's capital markets, signaling a heightened focus on maintaining their resilience, according to a readout from a recent Politburo meeting . The economic-policy session, chaired by President Xi Jinping, pledged to bolster the resilience and confidence of capital markets, marking an unusual direct mention of stocks in the official summary released on Thursday. The Communist Party's top decision-making body also committed to deepening capital market reforms in both investment and financing. This rhetoric underscores the leadership's priority on financial stability to support the stock market, which is seen as a key vehicle for technological innovation and independence through equity financing. The move comes as China's technology drive faces headwinds, with global sell-offs in artificial-intelligence stocks spilling over to mainland-listed chipmakers and transceiver manufacturers used in AI data centers. Previous efforts to stem the decline, including regulatory talks and state buying worth 60 billion yuan (US$8.9 billion), failed to revive investor confidence, with technology shares experiencing their largest-ever monthly slide. Brokerages including GF Securities and China Merchants Securities have indicated that the Politburo meeting suggests Beijing will adopt more meaningful actions to stabilize the stock market. According to Stephen Innes, a managing partner at SPI Asset Management, supportive measures would likely be measured and specific, primarily targeting the technology sector at the center of the US-China rivalry. He noted that Beijing remains committed to building a sovereign technology stack, while US restrictions make domestic capability more strategically valuable.
