Tempers flare in the Colombo Test as players face ICC sanctions. The ongoing second Test between India and Sri Lanka, held in Colombo, has witnessed heightened tensions with several players facing sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Two players, Yashasvi Jaiswal from India and Asitha Fernando of Sri Lanka, were each penalized 25% of their match fees and received demerit points after an altercation on the first day. Additionally, Sri Lankan bowler Prabath Jayasuriya was reprimanded and received a demerit point for inappropriate behavior toward ground equipment after being dismissed on Day two. On the third day, Sarfaraz Khan, substituting for his injured teammate Rishabh Pant, further stirred emotions among Sri Lankan players. His presence affected Dhananjaya de Silva and Niroshan Dickwella, both of whom were dismissed shortly after engaging with him. Morne Morkel, India's bowling coach, responded to the ongoing tensions by stating he was not overly concerned about competitive exchanges, noting, 'I just think the heat and humidity sometimes get to the players. Although we need to play under the code and respect the game, a bit of banter between the boys is always good to see. It will definitely bring out the fighting and competitive spirit in the game.' Morkel clarified that the exchanges were a natural part of the game as long as they adhered to the codes of conduct. The conflict reportedly began when Fernando dismissed Jaiswal and delivered a pointed remark as a send-off, leading Jaiswal to confront Fernando. Jayasuriya’s reprimand came from striking boundary wedges with his bat in frustration after being dismissed by Manav Suthar at the end of Day 2. The match dynamics reflect a mix of competitiveness and disciplinary action, highlighting the tension inherent in high-stakes cricket matches.
