ECUADOR IMPOSES 100 PCT TARIFF ON COLOMBIAN IMPORTS AMID TRADE TENSIONS

Ecuador imposed a 100 per cent tariff on Colombian imports, excluding strategic sectors like oil and energy, temporary admission regimes, customs transit, re-export, and private tourist vehicles. The tariff, described as a 'security surcharge,' was gradually increased from 30 per cent in February to 50 per cent in March. Border cities such as Tulcan in Ecuador and Ipiales in Colombia are particularly affected due to their reliance on cross-border trade, which annually handles over 500,000 tonnes of goods. Business groups warn the measure could disrupt supply chains, trade flows, and employment. Analysts note the policy shift introduces uncertainty to bilateral relations and economic activity in the border region.
