Greece plans to make early debt repayments worth €13 billion in 2026 to reduce its debt burden, strengthen investor confidence, and generate over €2 billion in savings over seven years. This follows the early repayment of €6.94 billion last June from Greece’s €52.3 billion bilateral loan with the eurozone. The government aims to use fiscal surpluses and strong liquidity to accelerate debt repayments, reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio to 137% this year. It also plans to bring Greece’s debt below Italy’s by the end of 2026. Officials estimate savings of around €30 million for every €1 billion of early debt repayment, leading to approximately €360 million in annual savings from the planned €13 billion repayment. Over seven years, these savings would exceed €2 billion. Lower borrowing costs and increased investor confidence are additional benefits. Greece has already repaid €36 billion early between 2019 and 2025, signaling proactive debt management to European institutions, credit rating agencies, and international investors. The strategy aims to further reduce Greece’s annual gross financing needs, extending beyond 2032. Scope Ratings projects Greece’s debt ratio to fall to 107% of GDP by 2031, from 136% this year and 128% in 2027, potentially bringing it below Italy’s and moving closer to the eurozone’s average of 90%. Upcoming credit-rating assessments by DBRS, Moody’s, Scope Ratings, Standard & Poor’s, and Fitch will evaluate Greece’s economic performance and debt reduction efforts.
