2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion looks like it might just be the most expensive film of all time, according to new figures that have come to light. Back when Steven Speilberg shepherded the first Jurassic Park film to the screen in 1993, he brought the movie in both under budget and ahead of schedule. Costing around $60m to make, it was nowhere near the most expensive film of all time ( Terminator 2: Judgment Day had cost $95-100m just two years prior), but it would become a franchise-sparking boix office juggernaut. As is Hollywood’s requisite, sequels followed, gradually upping the price. To the point where the sixth film in the saga, 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion , has now been unofficially crowned the most expensive film of all time. As per Fortune magazine , the cost of Jurassic World: Dominion has now been calculated at $658.8m. Just going to take a minute to absorb that information. I’m back. There were plenty of mitigating factors here, primarily the fact that Jurassic World: Dominion was a big blockbuster that carried on shooting amidst Covid restrictions. Universal had to foot an added bill for extensive testing, as well as holding cast and crew together in a ‘bubble’ environment. One particular hotel seemed to have done very well out of that. Furthermore, the studio had to pay ongoing costs while production was held up for nearly half a year. And even though a tax rebate helped Universal foot the enormous bill (dropping the amount the studio paid to around $530m), the cost of the film would have paid for the production of every single film in the 1993 box office top ten. And with change left over for a few rounds of drinks as well. Jurassic World: Dominion has turned a profit for the studio, but only just. Last year’s Jurassic World: Rebirth was deliberately more frugal, with Gareth Edwards’ sequel cost around $200m to make, and presumably whatever Jurassic Park/World 8 turns out to be will be around that level too.
