In a recent Instagram post, actress Sonam Khan has dispelled long-standing rumors regarding her relationship with filmmaker Rajiv Rai during the production of the 1989 blockbuster film, Tridev. For years, it was widely believed that her standout role and the film's hit song were the result of a romantic involvement with Rai. However, Sonam has clarified that there was no affair, and in fact, Rai initially did not even want to cast her in the film. On Saturday, Sonam shared a video of the popular song "Oye Oye" from Tridev, accompanied by a candid message. She stated, "Oye oye oye oye oh naaaaa as in a BIG No. Real story, I was not having an affair with my Tridev director. So read on....First day of Tridev shoot. First song. First rumour." She emphasised that both she and Rai were involved with other partners during the filming, countering the narrative that her success in the film was due to a romantic relationship with the director. Sonam elaborated on the misconceptions surrounding her role, noting, "As per popular belief, after Tridev released, there was a very strong belief that I was busy romancing the director during the making of Tridev, resulting in me getting more leverage than the other two leading ladies." She revealed that Rai was actually on set with his girlfriend while she had a boyfriend nearby, asserting that they were both committed to other relationships at the time. Furthermore, Sonam disclosed that she was not Rai's first choice for the film. "In fact, Rajiv didn't want me in Tridev. He had contacted and almost sealed the deal with another actress," she explained. It was only when that option fell through that she was cast, making it clear that her success was not due to any favoritism. "So, no romance, no secret phone calls, no so-called director privilege," she concluded. Following the release of Tridev, Sonam and Rajiv began dating and eventually married in 1991. After their marriage, she stepped away from acting to focus on family life, raising their son, who was diagnosed with autism. The couple lived in various countries before separating in 2001 and officially divorcing in 2016. Now, after a 30-year hiatus, Sonam has expressed her desire to return to the entertainment industry, particularly through digital platforms, indicating a new chapter in her career.
