London's Night Tube celebrates 10 years

Ten years and 67 million passengers later, London's Night Tube is a vital part of the capital's infrastructure. Plans for the Night Tube were announced in November 2013 due to growing demand for overnight travel. Originally slated to start in September 2015, the launch was delayed by a dispute over pay and working conditions between TfL and rail unions. The service launched on 19 August 2016, with over 50,000 journeys made on the Victoria and Central lines that first night. Lovely Obeng, a 19-year-old customer service assistant, started her first night shift at Tottenham Court Road station. She recalled the excitement among passengers and the sense of history as the team worked the launch night. Staff felt they were part of something significant, and passengers praised the service, including those commuting from night shifts or returning from night outings. Sir Sadiq Khan, then Mayor of London, joined passengers on the launch night, highlighting the service’s impact on London’s night-time economy. Over the years, the Night Tube expanded to include the Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, and Windrush lines, averaging over 81,000 journeys each night. During the Covid-19 pandemic, services were suspended in March 2020 and gradually resumed from late 2021, fully restored by July 2022. Obeng shared a memorable encounter where she helped a distressed passenger, illustrating the service’s role beyond transportation. She described the job as varied and challenging, emphasizing resilience and adaptability. While Thursday nights are now popular, TfL has no plans to expand the service beyond Fridays and Saturdays without additional funding and infrastructure changes.
