Philippines elected to UNESCO Cultural Heritage Committee until 2030

MANILA – The Philippines secured more than 100 votes during the elections of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (IGC-ICH) for the 2026–2030 term in Paris, France last June 17. The country got a wave of support from 68% of the 156 member-states that cast valid votes. Cambodia, Indonesia, and Japan were also elected alongside the Philippines from the Asia-Pacific group. The Philippine Embassy in France described the result it as a recognition of the rich cultural heritage and its efforts to preserve traditional and indigenous practices. Permanent Delegate to UNESCO Eduardo Jose de Vega stated that the election reflects the international community’s regard for the Philippines’ multicultural heritage. As a member until 2030, the country will help guide policies and best practices for safeguarding living heritage in the world. The Philippines also plans to promote capacity-building programs for heritage preservation in disaster- and climate-vulnerable areas, while advancing discussions on gender equality, disability inclusion, migration, and technologies.
