Munna Bhai MBBS Was Declared Disaster: Rajkumar Hirani ’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S , now considered a cult classic, was once doubted even before its release. The filmmaker recently revealed that a Bollywood director had strongly criticized the film during a trial screening. WATCH Pushpa Pose with Young Fan; Allu Arjun Shares Sweet Moment – Recalling the moment, Hirani said, “I remember when the film was completed and we were holding a trial show. A few people had come to watch it, including a director. After seeing it, he told me, ‘What have you done? You’ve made a disaster.’” The director reportedly questioned the film’s concept, especially casting Sanjay Dutt in a non-action role. “Sanjay Dutt is an action hero, and you’re making a film with him set in a hospital? And you’ve even shot the songs here. At least one song should have been filmed at a foreign location,” Hirani quoted him as saying. He further added that the director felt the film lacked visual appeal. “This should have been a colourful film. The characters should have been dressed in colourful clothes. What is this? You’ve put everyone in hospital uniforms,” the filmmaker recalled while speaking to Sanjay Arora. L Hirani also shared his nervous experience on the film’s first day. He visited Mumbai’s Gaiety Galaxy theatre, where a gatekeeper gave him a thumbs-down, making him think the audience didn’t like the film. However, things turned out differently inside. “When I went in, I saw the theatre was only about 50 per cent occupied. Then I realised he meant the occupancy was low. But the audience was thoroughly enjoying the film,” Hirani said. By evening, the film had picked up momentum, with multiple theatres reporting housefull shows, proving all doubts wrong.
