Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa is suing Samsung, a trillion dollar Korean tech company, for the alleged illegal use of her copyright image on the packaging of televisions without her knowledge or consent. The photo used was taken backstage at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024, in Texas, according to the lawsuit filed on May 8 with the United States District Court, California Central District. Lipa’s $15m suit calls for compensation for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and misappropriation of her likeness and image. According to the filing, the British performer learned in June 2025 that products were being sold across the United States with her image on the boxes. Photos began circulating online of a “Dua Lipa TV Box". Lipa asserts she contacted the tech company, demanding they stop using her image. However, Samsung was “dismissive and callous” in disregarding the request. The suit further alleges that Samsung capitalised on the perception that Lipa had endorsed the product, despite no endorsement being given. “Ms Lipa’s face was featured prominently in a large-scale marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, compensation or any authority over how her image was used,” according to the filing. “Ms Lipa did not authorise and would not have authorised such use.” The lawsuit also quoted comments on X, suggesting that some customers had purchased the televisions after seeing Lipa’s unauthorized photo. The comments included: “I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it" and ”I’d get that TV just because Dua Lipa is on it...That’s how obsessed I am. That’s how much I love her.”
