Top UK Diplomat Olly Robbins Exits Amid Vetting Controversy

Sir Olly Robbins, the UK Foreign Office's most senior official, has been forced to resign from his position. This move comes after the decision to override Peter Mandelson's failed security vetting was made by his department, despite initial clearance being denied.

The Guardian has learned that Robbins was told to step down after Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper lost confidence in him. The controversy surrounds Mandelson's appointment as US ambassador, which was announced by Starmer before the vetting process was complete.

Vetting Process and Controversy

Mandelson initially failed to secure vetting approval in late January 2025, following a highly confidential background check by security officials. However, the Foreign Office employed a rarely used authority to override the recommendation, paving the way for Mandelson's appointment.

The news of Mandelson's failed vetting has sparked intense scrutiny and calls for Starmer's resignation. Downing Street has released a statement stressing that Starmer and former Foreign Secretary David Lammy had no knowledge of the security officials' advice against granting Mandelson clearance.

A spokesperson stated, 'The security vetting process for Peter Mandelson was sponsored by the FCDO. The decision to grant Developed Vetting to Peter Mandelson against the recommendation of UK Security Vetting was taken by officials in the FCDO.' Starmer reportedly first learned of Mandelson's failed vetting on Tuesday, while Lammy found out when the news broke two days later.

Reaction and Aftermath

Robbins, the UK government's former Brexit negotiator, had taken over as permanent secretary just three weeks before the decision regarding Mandelson was made. He brought years of experience in international affairs and national security to the role.

Labour MP Chris Curtis has called Robbins' departure 'the right decision,' but cautioned against speculation over who should lose their roles. 'There have been a series of processes and decisions that have been made right at the top of government that have been the wrong ones,' he said. 'And we as a government, as political leaders, need to learn from those and ensure that things like that do not happen again.'

Other figures are calling for Starmer's resignation, with one anonymous government minister stating, 'This is a tipping point. There can be no more excuses; we're past apologies and there cannot be another fall person in the form of Olly Robbins. The PM must go.'
