The UK's chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has announced plans to break the link between gas costs and electricity prices. This move aims to reduce the impact of volatile gas prices on electricity bills, as gas prices often set the price of electricity under the current marginal cost pricing model.

Reeves, speaking in Washington, stated that she and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband are working on a practical way to delink electricity and gas prices. She emphasized that this change is necessary, especially as electricity becomes a larger part of the UK's energy mix. The details of the plan are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Background and Context

Miliband has long advocated for Labour's energy policies, which focus on shifting to renewables and reducing the UK's reliance on fossil fuels. The use of renewables has already reduced the amount of time gas sets the wholesale price of electricity in Britain by about a third since the early 2020s, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The head of Energy UK, Dhara Vyas, has also commented on the issue, stating that decoupling electricity prices from gas will occur gradually as the UK transitions to clean power. Vyas noted that this change will happen over time as more renewables are integrated into the system.

Reeves also discussed the North Sea oil and gas tiebacks, which involve using existing infrastructure to exploit larger oil and gas fields. The government is encouraging investment in this area and is working with energy companies to finalize the technical details.

Proposals and Reactions

Greenpeace has proposed a decoupling plan that involves moving gas plants into a regulated asset base, making gas a strategic reserve and reducing its impact on market prices. The organization's UK head of politics, Ami McCarthy, argued that it is absurd to let volatile gas prices dictate the cost of electricity and that the government's consideration of this issue is encouraging.

McCarthy stated, "It's absurd to let volatile gas dictate the cost of electricity in this country, and the price shock caused by Trump's reckless war on Iran is just the latest reminder of that." McCarthy also noted that the proposal could save billions of pounds per year by taking control of electricity prices away from the gas industry and allowing billpayers to benefit from cheaper, homegrown renewables.
