UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has reiterated his stance on not joining the US in the conflict in Iran, stating that he is 'not going to yield' to pressure from President Donald Trump. This comes after Trump expressed disappointment that the UK did not provide help when requested.

Trump, in an interview with Sky News, mentioned that the UK was 'not there' when the US needed them, and suggested that the tariff agreement between the two countries could be changed. Sir Keir, however, remains resolute in his decision, citing that it is not in the UK's national interest to join the war.

Strained Relationship

The relationship between the US and the UK has shown signs of strain in recent weeks, particularly over the Middle East conflict. Trump has frequently criticized Sir Keir for not signing off on direct military involvement, labeling him 'no Winston Churchill'. Despite this, the UK Prime Minister's spokesperson emphasized that the two countries still have a close relationship that spans trade, diplomacy, national security, and culture.

Speaking at an event in Washington DC, a spokesperson for the prime minister expressed frustration and anger that the US entered the war without a clear exit plan or objective. The conflict has also had economic implications, with the IMF cutting its estimate for UK growth this year to 0.8% due to the country's sensitivity to rapid rises in energy prices.

Trump, despite his criticism of the UK government's policies, looks forward to the upcoming royal state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla. He described the King as 'wonderful' and mentioned that their personal relationship would not be overshadowed by the current tensions between the two countries.
