The MTV VMAs have ditched their dedicated rock category for 2026, leaving fans with a surprisingly broad Alternative field instead. The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards have revealed this year’s nominees, but rock fans might notice something missing from the list: there is no Best Rock category. This omission marks a significant change for an awards show that has recognized rock and heavy music for decades. MTV introduced its Best Heavy Metal Video category in 1989, just five years after the VMAs launched, and the award later evolved through several name changes before becoming Best Rock. Over the years, the category has recognized some of the biggest names in rock, including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Pearl Jam, and Linkin Park. This year, that tradition appears to have come to an end. So where did rock go? The removal is even more notable given how long the category has existed, but MTV has not publicly explained why Best Rock has disappeared from this year’s nominations. The change also comes after years in which the category had increasingly shifted toward mainstream alternative, pop-rock, and pop-punk. Acts like Coldplay and Imagine Dragons became regular fixtures, while heavier modern rock was increasingly difficult to find among the nominees. The closest thing rock fans have this year is the Best Alternative category, although even that lineup is unlikely to satisfy anyone looking for something particularly heavy. The nominees for Best Alternative include Geese, mgk & Fred Durst, Noah Kahan, Olivia Rodrigo, SOMBR, Tame Impala, and twenty one pilots. This illustrates just how far the VMAs’ definition of alternative has moved from the heavy music that once occupied its own space. For fans of metal, hard rock, and heavier guitar music, the disappearance of Best Rock is another sign of how dramatically mainstream music awards have changed. Whether the category returns in future years remains unclear, as this year’s MTV VMAs will feature the above nominees across the awards lineup, with voting available through MTV’s official voting platform.
