$485m arena could pave Newcastle's path back to NBL

Newcastle's potential return to the NBL is gaining momentum with the development of a new 12,000-seat arena. The NSW Government has allocated $14 million for a 12-month detailed design phase. If full construction funding of over $485 million is secured, officials believe construction could begin in 2029. This new arena, to replace the 4,500-seat Newcastle Entertainment Centre, would address a key hurdle for Newcastle regaining an NBL licence. Executive Director of the NBL Group, Larry Kestelman, stated that the lack of a suitable venue is the main obstacle. He emphasized the need for modern facilities to attract a franchise. Recent developments, including the NSW Government's commitment, are seen as crucial for reviving basketball in Newcastle. Phil Gardner, CEO of Wests Group, expressed excitement about the potential for the Newcastle Falcons to return to the NBL, believing the new arena would make the franchise viable. The project aims to strengthen basketball’s foundation across all levels and enhance long-term opportunities for Newcastle. Other regions like Gold Coast and Canberra also express interest in securing an NBL licence.
