Amy Pascal Reveals Sony’s Real Marvel Strategy, and Who She Wants Directing the Next ‘Spider-Man'

Franchise longevity in Hollywood rarely happens by accident, and the Spider-Man partnership between Sony and Marvel has managed to sidestep messy contract-heavy entanglements that plague other cinematic universes. Producer Amy Pascal, who has guided the web-slinger from Sony’s earliest solo films through his current era in the MCU, has been in press rounds following ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ The film’s success has sparked conversation about the franchise’s future. In a new interview, Pascal revealed Sony’s Marvel arrangement operates on a picture-by-picture deal rather than long-term contracts, allowing flexibility in collaboration with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Lou D’Esposito. She described their partnership as wonderful, emphasizing that this structure hasn’t prevented her from being clear about who she wants directing the next Spider-Man film. Speaking to Deadline, Pascal confirmed no writers’ room exists for a follow-up but stated Destin Daniel Cretton’s potential return: ‘If we have our way, he certainly will be.’ Cretton, who directed ‘Brand New Day’ after a career spanning other Marvel projects, impressed Pascal with his grounded, character-first approach, emphasizing respect for physics and emotional authenticity. His work on ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ also highlighted their built-in trust. ‘Brand New Day’ opened to a record-breaking $360 million domestic weekend, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ proving his formula resonates commercially. Tom Holland’s return remains informal, with no official deal locked in. The picture-by-picture nature of Sony-Marvel’s arrangement aligns with this informal path. Pascal also shared her philosophy: ‘The way to make a great movie is to work with a great director.’
