As if by magic, Mr Benn appears in exhibition of late author's characters

Simon Marks wrote that 'As if by magic, the shopkeeper appeared,' a famous line from the Mr Benn television series. An exhibition is showcasing original artworks of David McKee, the late author behind beloved children's characters like Mr Benn, King Rollo, and Elmer the Elephant. These artworks have been loaned to St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery in Lymington, Hampshire, by the artist's family, who passed away in 2022. Some illustrations depict stories never televised, including one where Mr Benn visits a prison. McKee's son, Brett, revealed that Mr Benn's home, Festive Road, was based on the actual road where their family lived. Brett explained, 'He based it on people who were around at the time. Kids sometimes made jokes, impersonating Mr Benn's walk because of his distinctive gait.' McKee aimed to make people feel happier through his work. The exhibition includes other creations like King Rollo, adapted for TV, and Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, published as a book series but only one adapted for TV. In the 1980s, McKee illustrated Paddington books. Gallery curator Steve Marshall highlighted the exhibition’s nostalgic appeal, saying the original artworks' vivid colors and details make them stand out compared to reproductions. Marshall noted that the exhibition evokes childhood memories, bringing warmth and happiness back to viewers.
